CHAPTER TWENTY

There they are!

Assandra had been worried she’d lost the trail. Following Jack and Howard through London had been hard work, especially since she wanted to keep plenty of distance. She’d actually lost them a few times before eventually catching up and finding the pair by sheer luck, only to lose their trail again for an extended period of time. The most recent time, she had worried they were gone for good, and that her curiosity as to what Jack was up to would go unfulfilled. To her utter relief, she eventually saw them again a half hour later, this time leading a group of men back the way they’d come. Assandra had been forced to duck into an alley to avoid being seen.

After watching the group pass, she was certain the new arrivals were Deathborn—they looked the type. Filthy, mean, nasty, and a rag-tag mix of body types: thin, fat, broad, tall, and short.

All were carrying long, thin swaddles of material, which Assandra had no doubt contained weapons. Each man also had a pack with him, slung over his shoulders.

They’re on the hunt, Assandra realised.

Panic started to bloom in her gut. She’d seen firsthand how Deathborn treated wytches like her. If what she’d been sensing recently really was a coven, and those Deathborn were somehow following the same trail, then it could only spell trouble.

Jack being with them gave Assandra pause, because from their brief time together, she’d grown to like him. He didn’t seem to be like the rest. But at the same time, she couldn’t let those men snatch away her chance of finding others like her. So, Assandra stuck to the shadows and followed the group of men as they made their way deeper into London.
